The Department of Maritime Civilizations offers students an exceptional opportunity to explore the history, archaeology and texture of marine cultures, as well as dealing with the influence of the natural environment on their development and history.

Studies in the Department of Maritime Civilizations focus on diversified fields related to the subject, and these include underwater and coastal archaeology, marine biology and ecology, marine history, geology and geomorphology. These multidisciplinary studies, combined with field trips and courses and field research exercises, provide students interested in exploring the interaction between man and the sea, with advanced knowledge and experience in research methods. There is an emphasis on the roles of harbors, ships and seamanship as part of the Mediterranean marine heritage.

Studies are in both a thesis track and a non-thesis track

The Department of Maritime Civilizations will accept students with a Bachelor’s (B.A.) degree to one of the Department’s two tracks, as follows:

Track A (includes writing a final research paper) – with a grade point average of “good” (at least 82) in their B.A. studies in each of the departments of study.
Track B (compulsory final exam) – with a grade point average of “good” (at least 76) in their B.A. studies in each of the departments of study.

Employment options after graduation: In the fields of research and academic teaching, work in institutes, offices and public or governmental organizations related to marine and environment issues, work with bodies in the private sector handling marine and coastal related projects.
